Time Magazine lets You Know if Your Toddler is a (Future) Gambling Addict

Posted by admin on Mar 2, 2009 in Uncategorized

Look at a child in kindergarten and according to this Time article you can tell if he or she is going to be on the World Poker Tour, or more likely, sleeping at a bus stop in Atlantic City. Gamblers have poor impulse control - shocking, I know - and apparently this can be determined as early as kindergarten.

Read more great news stories with a time magazine subscription, the print subscription to Time is worth your time and money.

The more inattentive the child, the higher his or her likely to be gambling in middle school. That’s right, gambling before they can enjoy the free drinks or appreciate the pretty cocktail waitresses. The articles says they engaged in bingo, cards, video poker or other video games for money; buying lottery tickets; or placing bets on professional sports. I guess the Wynn isn’t desperate enough to let them in yet.

Time magazine loves to discuss psycholgy changes and obscure medical news.

Technology Performed Suicide Mission to Destroy Snail Mail

Posted by admin on Feb 15, 2009 in Uncategorized

In the wee hours of the morning Chris, the owner of a free hosting website awoke to get a late night snack. It’s a good thing he did, as he walked into his kitchen he could smell smoke.

He grabbed a fire extinguisher that was stored in a closet just in case, and then started looking around for the source of the smoke.  Heading down to his basement where he housed a few webservers used for his free hosting website. He Noticing the smoke was a bit thicker but, “not enough for me to freak out.”

“Upon turning the corner at the bottom of my stairs I could see fire! Definitely not an inferno, but flames none the less.”

Chris ran over with the fire extiguisher he had brought down and began spraying it on his small rack of servers and a wall mounted shelf above.  Succesfully exstiguishing the small fire, the damages were gone through. Two servers, and a box of letters sent to Chris from family members while he was living out of the country.

Chris says he isn’t risking anything like this again and is entrusting his server needs to a large server management company.

Was this a suicide mission gone successful by technology? Probably not, but it makes for a good headline.

The agency is asking for public help in identifying suspects. The DPS wants Anyone with information to call 956-728-2201.

Bank Robber Tunneled His Way Into the Bathroom, Missed the Safe

Posted by admin on Feb 3, 2009 in Uncategorized

An unnamed 21-year-old devised a fool proof bank robbery and set the scheme in motion. After tunneling underground to emerge in the safe, he missed his target and popped up in the bathroom.

He was arrested quickly after making his undignified entrance to the toilet, said a the French newspaper La Provence.

The target was Banque Populaire in Marseilles, and his plan was to emerge in the room housing the safety deposit boxes, which he was going to get into with another brilliant plan, I’m sure.

Alarms were however triggered when he made way into the bathroom instead, and authorities arrived shortly after.

Baby Born with Twelve Fingers and Twelve Toes

Posted by admin on Feb 2, 2009 in Uncategorized

12335229187308.jpgA baby born in San Francisco has six perfectly formed and functional fingers and toes on his hands and feet, say doctors at Saint Luke’s Hospital.

Kamani Hubbard’s extra digits look so normal they weren’t noticed at first, said his mother, Miryoki Gross, of Daly City.

Extra digits run in the father’s side of the family, said dad Kris Hubbard, but none have been so perfectly developed.

Kris Hubbard himself had nubs of sixth fingers removed as a child because they were non-functioning, reported KTVU-TV, San Francisco. That won’t be the case with his son, born three weeks ago, because Kamani’s fingers and toes function perfectly, said Dr. Michael Treece.

“It’s merely an interesting and beautiful variation rather than a worrisome thing,” said Treece. “Imagine what sort of a pianist a 12-fingered person would be” or flamenco guitarist or typist, he said.

“I just want him to see what greatness will be in store for him,” said Kris Hubbard, noting famous polydactyly people include former Florida Marlins’ pitcher Antonio Alfonseca and the late blues guitarist Hound Dog Taylor.

Porn Clip Aired During Super Bowl Broadcast

Posted by admin on Feb 2, 2009 in Uncategorized

People young and old were gathered around their TVs yesterday in Tucson Arizona watching the Super Bowl. The action was hot, and all of a sudden it got a lot hotter when the game feed switched to a clip from an adult channel showing porn during the Super Bowl.

This wasn’t your made for tv adult action with odd angles where you can never actually see anything. This was full frontal, hardcore action. Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you look at it the porn clip was only shown on standard def TVs

Comcast released the following statement:
“We are mortified by last evening’s Super Bowl interruption and we apologize to our customers. Our initial investigation suggests this was an isolated malicious act. We are conducting a thorough investigation to determine who was behind this.”

*edit*

this is definitely NOT safe for work :

Improperly Prepared Blowfish Testicles Poison Seven

Posted by admin on Jan 29, 2009 in Uncategorized

Blowfish testicles prepared by an unauthorized chef sickened seven diners in northern Japan and three remained hospitalized Tuesday after eating the poisonous delicacy.

The owner of the restaurant in Tsuruoka city, who is also the chef, had no license to serve blowfish and was being questioned on suspicion of professional negligence, police official Yoshihito Iwase said.

Blowfish, while extremely poisonous if not prepared properly, is considered a delicacy in Japan and is consumed by thrill-seeking gourmets.

Iwase said the seven men ordered sashimi and grilled blowfish testicles at the restaurant Monday night.

Shortly after, they developed limb paralysis and breathing trouble and started to lose consciousness — typical signs of blowfish poisoning — and were rushed to a hospital for treatment, Iwase said.

A 68-year-old diner remained hospitalized in critical condition with respiratory failure and two others, aged 55 and 69, were in serious condition, he said.

“It’s scary. If you go to a decent-looking restaurant that serves fugu, you would assume a cook has a proper fugu license,” Iwase said, using the Japanese term for blowfish.

Blowfish poison, called tetrodotoxin, is nearly 100 times more poisonous than potassium cyanide, according to the Ishikawa Health Service Association. It can cause death within an hour and a half after consumption.

Three people died and 44 others were sickened by blowfish poisoning in 2007 — most of them after catching the fish and cooking it at home — according to the Health Ministry.

Utah State Tobacco Prevention and Control Dwindling

Posted by admin on Jan 23, 2009 in Uncategorized

I know this is not the usual topic of our blog here, but please bear with us.

Quote:
We need your support to continue to make strides in tobacco prevention and promotion in Utah. With a plan to pretty much gut the Utah Department of Health’s Health and Promotions Bureau, the Health and Human Services Executive Appropriations Committee needs you to tell them that they are off their rockers.

As per yesterday’s Health and Human Services (HHS) Base Budget recommendations (http://www.le.state.ut.us/asp/interim/Commit.asp?Yea
r=2009&Com=APPHHS), Utah’s Tobacco Prevention and Control Program may be eliminated in FY09, FY10, and beyond.

FY09 cuts: $4,049,800 (will flatline all programs this year to accomodate)
FY10 cuts: $7,167,300 (eliminates all State funding for tobacco prevention)

ACTION IS NEEDED IMMEDIATELY. Vote was set for Friday but I have heard it has been postponed. Executive Appropriations will vote on the budgets above.
Here are reasons we need tobacco prevention and control:

1. It saves lives - smoking is the #1 preventable cause of death.
2. Smoking costs taxpayers millions of dollars each year.
3. Prevention and cessation programs are proven to work and Utah has been effective in reducing the number of smokers.
4. Other states who have cut tobacco spending, like Florida, Minnesota and California at times to help balance budgets, quickly saw youth smoking rates increase.

Act quickly to let your voice be heard. Phone is better than email as legislators may not access email before tomorrow.
